There’s a strong interest in videoconferencing and distance learning. I believe that hardware-based videoconferencing will slowly disappear in favor of unified communications devices (single devices that incorporate phone, video, Internet, a PDA, a cell phone, and an MP3 player all inone). There are initiatives to develop unified communicationsdevices from technology leaders such as Cisco, Nortel, Radvision, HitCast, and others that will gradually eliminate the distinctions between discrete devices. As that technology proceeds, a student can have the choice of listening to a podcast of the class or dialing into a videoconference of the class using the same device.
